Are we Free?

April 2024

As we commemorate Freedom Day in South Africa again today, let's do justice to those who campaigned for freedom prior to 1994, and commit to ending the appalling abuse of power that marks the way in which our country is governed today. Let's end corruption, and the plundering of national resources that is crippling our "free" land - otherwise we will remain enslaved to a government that does not have the interests of our citizens at heart. We have a Bill of Rights and a Constitution that proclaims our rights to safety and security of person, but crime is out of control and the Government has failed to protect it's citizens.

It is the 30th anniversary of our freedom today, and strangely enough, it is the 50th anniversary of Portugal's freedom two decades and two days apart - 25th April 1974 / 2024. How different are the two! Portugal is a relatively poor country but with negligible crime, an unemployment rate of 6,5%, electricity is available and clean water flows, the roads are free of potholes and a lot is done to uplift the poor. In November 2023 Portugal did a test run, running for a week, meeting the power needs of its 10 mil population using only wind, solar and hydro power operating the grid without fossil fuels. If Portugal can do it, so can South Africa who used to be the power grid of Africa.

Let Freedom Day mean something and let's restore our human rights to good government, safety and resources.
